What Are Dental Crowns?

Dental Crowns also known as dental caps are mainly used to fit over and protect damaged, root filled or decayed teeth.

Crowns restore the tooth’s shape and size, strength and improves the overall appearance of the tooth and as such also improves overall eating ability.

A dental crown is normally used to restore single teeth but can be used in combination with a false tooth to restore gaps – this is know an a dental bridge (see below regarding ‘dental bridge’)

What is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge is used to replace one or more missing teeth and consists of a false tooth (where the gap is) with a crown on either side.

Crowns (caps) are placed over the existing teeth, with the false tooth covering the gap. The dental crowns help to anchor the false tooth into place restoring the look and function of the teeth.

Restoration using a dental bridge can be used to fill an area where there are 1, 2 or 3 gaps. For example a dental bridge restoration of 3 gaps can be carried out using a 5 unit bridge, which consists of 3 false teeth anchored on each end by two dental crowns.

What Are Dental Crowns and Dental Bridges Made of?

Dental crowns and bridges can be made of quite a few different materials including, porcelain/ceramic, metal bonded, gold and silver.

Porcelain / Ceramic Crowns and bridges are the most natural looking and ideal for front teeth. Examples include Emax and Lava Crowns.

Metal bonded crowns and bridges consists of a metal core which sites over the tooth. The metal core is covered by a porcelain/ceramic top layer which provides the final tooth layer. Strong, durable and more affordable than a full porcelain or ceramic crown.

Gold Crowns and bridges are made from a gold alloy which, although not natural looking, give a unique aesthetic look but is also very strong and rarely chips or breaks.

Silver crowns and bridges are made from a metal alloy. It is very much like a gold crown but of course silver, and is less expensive than a gold crown

What To Expect From a Dental Crown or Dental Bridges?

Cosmetic dental crowns cover the entire outer surface of your prepared tooth or dental implant and are often referred to, and widely known as caps.

In addition to their protective function, crowns may be used for cosmetic reasons to improve the appearance of a discoloured tooth or ones with large old-fashioned fillings on show, improving self-confidence.

Dental bridges are used to fill in the gaps left by missing teeth and are anchored in place on the natural tooth nearest to the empty space. Both crowns and bridges are non-removable and must be fixed in place with a special cement. It’s a very straightforward routine procedure that is proven and simple with positive benefits for those deciding upon such treatment.

Patients who have a crown or bridge to restore their smiles achieve both the function and appearance of natural, healthy teeth. This will improve the self-confidence and well being of any customer and ensure that your contact with Aesthetika is a pleasurable and rewarding one.
