5 Tips for Whiter (and Healthier!) Teeth
It’s difficult to argue that whiter teeth, and good oral hygiene in general, doesn’t make us feel more confident in our daily routine. And like many of us, this may have been overlooked in the past.
Take a minute to stop and think of the micro-moments that happen throughout our day; business meetings, squashed on the tube, crammed into elevators, family photos, etc. Now put yourself in those situations with poor oral hygiene. Perhaps it’s a business meeting – bad breath; family photos – missing teeth; or even for the lucky few, a first date – stained teeth. The list could go on.. But you get the idea. Poor oral hygiene can only play a negative affect on how we go about our day-to-day lives.
Simply put, healthier and happier teeth = healthier and happier you.
For this blog post we’ll be discussing stained teeth (first date or no first date!) and sharing our five top tips on how to regain a new-found confidence through a happier, whiter smile.
1. Twice, for two.
Twice a day, for two minutes – the not so magic formula for when, and for how long, we should be brushing our teeth. Some experts say that for optimal oral hygiene, we should be brushing our teeth after every meal. And we’re not saying they’re wrong, however, we’re being practical.
It’s not always quite that easy if we’re having lunch on the go, or at a business lunch, to simply pop to the bathroom for a quick brush.
As long as you clean your teeth once in the morning, and once in the evening, that’s fine by us. However, both for two minutes at a time. No shortcuts here please.
2. Watch what you eat and drink.
Surprising to some, but certain foods and drinks can and do discolour our teeth. Especially when consumed in excess. The most common culprits include; red wine, balsamic vinegar, berries, curries and tomato ketchup.
Now we realise some of the above do have their health benefits. Berries being high in antioxidants, and coffee.. well coffee just being the cure for every Monday morning. So we’re not saying cut these out from your diet all together. The key however is moderation.
3. Out with the old, in with the new.
A whiter smile could be as easy as throwing out your old toothbrush. There’s no ‘use-by-date’ of when you should replace your toothbrush (or the head of your electric toothbrush). But as a general rule of thumb you should aim to replace every three months, or as soon as the bristles begin to bend and look worn.
4.Don’t forget your tongue.
Brushing your tongue is commonly associated with fresher breathe (which is true), however it has it’s added benefits. Overtime your tongue can accumulate bacteria, which eventually can lead to teeth discoloration.
Here’s a quick tip – make sure to rinse your toothbrush after every stroke on your tongue to ensure you’re actually removing bacteria, instead of simply re-depositing.
